Rio Tinto’s Argyle diamond mine in the east Kimberley has been operating since 1983, first as an alluvial mine, then an open pit and since 2013 as an underground mine. As one of the world’s largest diamond suppliers, Argyle produces diamonds in a range of colours, including white, champagne, cognac, blue, violet, pink and red gems.
Argyle has a long history as an employer and economic contributor in the east Kimberley region with a focus on strengthening the capacity of local communities through the creation of training, education and employment programs, local business development initiatives and support for community development projects.
After more than three decades of production, Argyle is now preparing for closure – planning for which has been ongoing throughout the life of the mine to ensure it is closed responsibly, with dignity and complete awareness of the footprint being left behind. Closure planning is heavily reliant on engagement with local stakeholders and encompasses safety and compliance, post-mining land use, reshaping of landforms, water, biodiversity, community capacity and resource development.
